El Campeonato De Madrid Comes To La Herreria
11-10-2011From the 6th -10th September, one of Spain’s leading national professional events, El Campeonato de Madrid, came to La Herreria. The event is open to all professional golfers who are Spanish, or who have lived in Spain for a minimum of two years. Unfortunately that made Academy Director Martin Cummins ineligible, but with the workload that Martin received participation would have been impossible.
Obviously the tournament gave Golden Swing La Herreria Golf Academy a perfect chance to showcase its facilities, and not surprisingly, the professionals were mare than impressed with the facilities available. Martin was able to offer a club repair/adjustment service similar to that of a European Tour event, which many players took advantage of. Martin spent many hours checking the lofts and lies, of irons and wedges of players who clearly do not have that opportunity at their own club. Several players also, with Martin’s guidance, checked out which of their longer clubs were the most suitable with the Flightscope launch monitor, again something that many players had never had the chance to do previously. The interest was such that some players were taking photographs of the facility, to go back and show their colleagues and clubs.
Several European Tour players were in the field including Santiago Luna, Carlos Rodiles and Jesus Maria Arruti. This gave Martin, who worked on the European Tour, a chance to meet some old friends some of whom were unaware that he is now Academy Director at La Herreria. Many players therefore took the chance to have Martin look at their techniques, and with news spreading fast , Martin very quickly became inundated with player seeking his advice.
In tournament itself after two rounds Juan Antonio Bragulat opened up a five shot lead with a stunning second round of 62(-9) for a 36 score of 142(-10). Four players including Carlos Rodiles, and Roberto Sabastien, were at five under. Sebastien is a young amateur who was given a special invitation by the Spanish Golf Federation. He is from the same course as Sergio Garcia in Castello, and looks to a name to remember for the future. On the final day a superb 65(-6) gave Carlos Rodiles a one shot win over Jesus Legarrea, of Pamplona, and Eduardo de La Riva, from Barcelona, after a poor finish from Bragulat.
During his winner’s speech Rodiles, made a special point of saying how impressed he was with Golden Swing La Herreria Golf Academy, and how it was the talk of the players’ lounge.
The championship will return to La Herreria next year with many players openly expressing their desire to come back.
